In the wake of the Bundestag elections of February 2025, Germany is now facing a political change of course – also in terms of foreign policy. The new federal government will have to deal with an increasingly fragmented world order: The United States is retreating as a global power, Europe must first find new unity before it can act, while multilateral institutions are losing influence. At the same time, authoritarian regimes are gaining strength as democratic achievements find themselves in decline in many places around the world.
Against this backdrop, the pressing questions that arise are: What goals and strategies should Germany pursue in its foreign policy towards Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East? How can democratic principles, economic interests, and geopolitical realities be reconciled? What instruments are available to the new government to act effectively in a world beset by growing power competition?
The GIGA Forum brings together experts from academia and practice to discuss these key issues. Together, we will analyse the challenges and opportunities facing German foreign policy in and with the Global South and explore the scope for action for the coming legislative period.
