Collection, use, and storage of personal data

You can visit our website without us collecting your personal data. Personal data will be collected to commence or execute a contract, and when you contact our institute by way of the registration form or by e-mail. Your data will be used solely for the particular, specified purposes. It will be used only for concrete purposes, meaning for the commencement, implementation, or execution of a contract. Following the fulfillment of these express purposes, your data will be deleted, although tax law and other legal stipulations may first allow such a deletion after a particular set time period.

When you access our website, log files will be stored. This data will not be matched to a particular person. We will also not combine or collate this data with other data sources. The anonymised data serves solely the purpose of statistical analysis of the visit to our website. Following the statistical analysis, the data will be deleted.

The following data will be recorded upon each visit to our website:

    • the IP address

    • the browser type used

    • the date and time of visit

    • the amount of data transferred

    • the name of the website from which the data is requested

    • the name of any file potentially downloaded from our website

When you visit our website, your IP address will be recorded in a log file on our server. In certain circumstances, the analysis of the IP address can facilitate a trace back to the particular user. Such an analysis will not be carried out by us, however, and the log data will not be provided to any third party.

    Newsletter

We provide you with the opportunity to subscribe to our Newsletter and e-mail notices on new publications and events. Aside from your e-mail address, you can voluntarily provide further data, e.g. your first and last name, the name of your company, and your preferred language. This data will be utilised only for sending out our newsletters.

You will receive our Newsletter only if you have previously expressly confirmed that we should activate that service for you. This activation adheres to the so-called “double opt-in process,” which goes as follows: Before sending you the Newsletter for the first time, we will send you a confirmation e-mail in which you will be asked once again whether you would like to receive our Newsletter. If you confirm by way of the link provided, you will receive our Newsletter from that point forward. We utilise personal data in relation to the consumption of our Newsletter and for statistical purposes, as well as to optimise the usefulness of the Newsletter for readers regarding institute-specific information and products, in addition to promotional purposes of the GIGA. The usage data collected in that context, e.g. click reactions and receipt and read confirmations, are not provided to any third party or used for any other purposes than those named here. You can unsubscribe from the Newsletter at any time at no cost by using the relevant link found at the bottom of each Newsletter. You can also unsubscribe by contacting, by e-mail or by post, the responsible person listed above (contact person). Neither your e-mail address nor any potentially gathered data regarding user behaviour will be used for the Newsletter from that point forward.

Your rights to information, correction, blockage, deletion, and revocation

You have the right to receive information free of charge at any time on the personal data we have stored on you. You also have a right to have your data corrected, blocked, or deleted. Regarding your request for information disclosure, e.g. on the blocking, deletion, or correction of your data, please get in touch with the contact person listed above.

Right to object based on Art. 13 para. 2c and Art. 21 of the General Data Protection Regulation

You have the right to withdraw your consent to the processing of your personal data. In the event of a justified revocation, or of a justified request for deletion, your data will be deleted accordingly. Excluded from this is data whose deletion would be in conflict with legally or contractually obliged time periods of storage. Further excluded data includes that required for the establishment, execution, and settlement of legal transactions, or that which must be stored for accounting purposes.

Your revocation will be effective henceforth. Your withdrawal of consent can be made in any format. Please address your objection hereto to the responsible party, via the contact details listed above.

Dissemination of personal data to third parties

The data collected is disseminated only to companies contracted by us in the framework of the contract execution. These companies are:

    • SYSTOPIA GmbH (SYSTOPIA GmbH , Adenauerallee 12-14, 53113 Bonn , Germany)

    • HINTERLAND software (Altstadtblick 3, 14473 Potsdam, Germany)

In order to provide personalised advertisements to our users and/or to use their data for market-research purposes, we create pseudonymous user profiles using cookies and IP addresses. By way of these cookies, pseudonymous data will also be analysed for the purposes of determining reach. To that end, we work with our partner organisations. There is no further usage of your data. You are entitled to receive information about your data and revoke your already granted permission regarding the data stored by us and given to third parties at any time. Any requests along those lines can be directed to the following address: [email protected].

    Use of cookies

We use cookies to optimise our website and facilitate the use of various functions. Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer. The majority of these cookies are deleted from your computer after your browser session has ended. These cookies are called “session cookies.” Another type of cookie remains on your computer and allows us to recognise your computer on a future visit to our website. These cookies are called “persistent cookies.” By way of these persistent cookies, we are able to record your interests – for instance:

    • the type of content read,

    • the number of pages visited per day.

We also use cookies for the statistical analysis of access behaviour. This analysis is conducted in an anonymised fashion.

This website uses Google Analytics, a web analysis service of Google, Inc. (“Google”). Google Analytics uses so-called “cookies.” The information obtained through a cookie about your use of this website (including your IP address) is transferred to a Google server in the United States and stored there.

So-called “social media plug-ins” for the platforms Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ are installed on the GIGA website. The GIGA does not collect any personal data through these social media plug-ins or about their use. In order to stop data from being transferred to the providers of these platforms without the knowledge of the user, the GIGA implements the Shariff plug-in of Heise Medien GmbH & Co. KG. This plug-in ensures that no personal data is shared with the providers of the individual social plug-ins, as long as you visit our website without using the social media plug-ins. Only if you click on one of these social media plug-ins can your data be transferred to the provider and stored there.

    VG Wort

Our website and mobile web service make use of the “Scalable Central Measuring Method” (SZM) of Kantar Germany GmbH in order to statistically determine the likelihood of texts being copied. In the process, anonymous measurement values are collected.

Traffic measurement occurs via either a digital signature or alternatively the creation of a session cookie, both generated from various pieces of information automatically shared by your browser, so as to recognise computer systems. IP addresses are processed anonymously.

The procedure was developed in compliance with European Union data protection laws. The sole purpose here is to determine the probability of individual texts being copied. The identity of individual users is never revealed. As such, your anonymity is guaranteed. You will not be exposed to any adverts via the system either.

    Changes to our privacy policy

In order to meet the current legal requirements or to ensure that the privacy statement corresponds to changes made to our services (e.g. the initiation of new services), we reserve the right to adjust the privacy statement accordingly. Thus, the most current privacy statement is valid as of any new visit to our website.

This statement is in two languages, German and English. In the event of any inconsistency, the German version takes legal precedence; the English version is a translation for informational purposes only.
