  • Concepts are of crucial importance for any research design. This GIGA session seeks to discuss how broad and multidimensional social science concepts can be thoroughly operationalized for empirical research. Using the concepts of “sanctions” and “authoritarian regime”, the lecturer will draw on the designs ofseveral research projects to examine ways to apply these concepts for empirical research and offers advice on the doctoral researchers’ own projects. 

    Dates 

    The course will take place in person at GIGA Hamburg from 1pm to 3pm on 24th November 2022 (hybrid option depending on demand).

    About the Lecturer  

    Christian von Soest is a Lead Research Fellow and the Head of the Peace and Security Research Program at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). He is also a member of the GIGA Berlin Office and specializes in international interventions and sanctions, authoritarian regimes, and legitimation strategies.
