Scientific careers are judged on the ability to write high-quality academic manuscripts.This intensive 2-day workshop will provide participants with an introduction to academic writing, including helpful input on the conventions of academic writing, structure, the language used, the potential pitfalls and strategies for editing texts. A key challenge is to express complex ideas in a clear, precise and readable text, without sacrificing scientific accuracy.To this end, all students will bring a 1-page academic text they have written to the workshop and edit it step by step. They will be given individual feedback on their text by other participants and the trainer and will therefore leave the workshop with a better awareness of their strengths and weaknesses.
The workshop contents:
The conventions of academic writing and text types
Structure and argumentation
Story telling and flow
Style: writing precise and readable texts
Writing as a process: preparing, planning, avoiding blocks
Phrasebank and useful resources
Methodology
Input by trainer, practical writing exercises, editing own text and peer editing, discussions.
Dates
The course will take place in person at the GIGA in Hamburg from 9:00 am - 4:00pm on 7th and 8th December 2022 (hybrid option depending on demand). Please note that this course is GIGA internal only.
About the trainer
Amanda Habbershaw is a communication trainer specialized in English communication skills for researchers. She has been teaching English at universities for 25 years and has regularly given academic writing workshops at various universities and research institutes for the last 15 years.
