At the workshop closing her DFG-funded project, Maria Josua presented the theoretical approach and results of her research, notably the conceptual and empirical contributions that were published in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Politics and in Contemporary Politics.

This workshop tackled the question of state-society relations in the Maghreb from a historical perspective. Focusing on the late phase of the rule of Ben Ali, the contributors investigated the interrelationship of communication and control between societal and state actors. Comparative analyses embedded the historical findings from Tunisia into the bigger picture of developments in the MENA.

Maria Josua organized and moderated a virtual GIGA Forum on how to report on autocratic regimes in Western media.

Maria Josua participated in the Workshops on Middle East Politics in Tübingen with an input on "Media responsibility vis-à-vis autocratic discourse and disinformation in the digital age" on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the CMEPS Master Program of The American University in Cairo and the University of Tübingen.

The article highlights the recent increase in repression in Algeria. Dr. Maria Josua classifies arbitrary court sentences against human rights activists.

Although known as a host and transit country, Turkey today is in the midst of its fifth wave of emigration as a result of the country’s authoritarian and economic challenges. From asylum seekers to wealthy businesspeople, many seek to leave Erdoğan’s Turkey to make a fresh start elsewhere.
