Successful Defence of Doctoral Theses in 2023

We are pleased to announce the successful defence of their doctoral theses by Rafael Castro Alegría, Hana Attia, Juliana Tappe Ortiz, Tom Konzack, Niklas Krösche, Aline-Sophia Hirseland, Jorge A. Rincón Barajas, and Anna Fünfgeld,


  • Rafael Castro Alegría defended his doctoral thesis, "Crisis and Regional (Dis)Integration: A Post-structuralist Approach," on 25 Januray 2023 at the Kiel University. The examiners awarded his thesis magna cum laude.

    Hana Attia defended her doctoral thesis, “Biased Coercion: The Imposition, Management, and Termination of US Sanctions,” on 20 April 2023 at the University of Konstanz. The Examination Committee awarded her thesis summa cum laude.

    Moreover, Juliana Tappe Ortiz defended her doctoral thesis on “Peace Spoilers and Peace Supporters: How Individual Characteristics Influence the Outcome and Duration of Civil Conflicts” on 25 April 2023 at the University of Hamburg. The examiners awarded her thesis magna cum laude.

    Tom Konzack defended his doctoral thesis, “From Peaceful Protest to Carnage: The Role of Resources and Sponsors in the Tactical Choices of Non-State Actors,” on 12 June 2023 at the University of Hamburg. The examiners awarded his thesis summa cum laude.

    Niklas Krösche defended his doctoral thesis, "Explaining African Union Conflict and Crisis Interventions. The Drivers and Dynamics of Security Regionalism in Africa," on 13 September 2023 at the Leuphana University Lüneburg. The examiners awarded his thesis magna cum laude.

    In addition, Aline-Sophia Hirseland defended her doctoral thesis, "Political integration in the Global South. What we can learn from Indigenous peoples in Bolivia and Muslim minorities in Guyana and Suriname," on 20 September 2023 at the University of Hamburg. The examiners awarded her thesis magna cum laude.

    Jorge A. Rincón Barajas defended his doctoral thesis "Current Issues on Rural Development: Land Tenure, Land Use Change and Climate Change," on 15 December 2023 at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. The examiners awarded his thesis cum laude.

    Anna Fünfgeld defended her doctoral thesis, "No Power to Change?
Energy Hegemony and Trasformismo in Indonesia," on 21 December 2023 at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. The examiners awarded her thesis summa cum laude.

    With their research, GIGA doctoral students make a valuable contribution to global and regional studies. The GIGA team is proud of our colleagues, and warmly congratulates them on this outstanding success and significant milestone in their academic careers.

    GIGA Doctoral Programme

    The GIGA has a long tradition of integrating young scholars into its research matrix. This culminated in the establishment of the GIGA Doctoral Programme, which seeks to provide a platform for both German and international early-career academics. Herewith they can pursue continued professional development and their own research, particularly in the field of Comparative Area Studies.
