Online Workshop
21/10/2021 - 22/10/2021
The MIASA Publishing Workshop is designed to foster research by African scholars with the aim of facilitating its publication in renowned African Studies journals. The workshop is jointly organised by Africa Spectrum (published by the GIGA Institute for African Affairs as part of the GIGA Journal Family) and the Contemporary Journal of African Studies (published by the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana). It also benefits from collaboration with the African Studies Association of Africa.
The workshop will bring together scholars from Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe. These researchers from ten different African countries work on diverse questions related to the politics, societies, economics of Africa, with a particular focus on the challenges of sustainable governance in their different fields of study. Topics range from the politics of gender and female activism to questions of pre- and post-colonial governance and state formation as well as local ownership of and resistance vis-à-vis small and large-scale development projects.
During the workshop, the participants will benefit from in-depth feedback on their research by experienced journal editors, gain insights into editorial work to demystify the submission and review process, and discuss publication strategies as well as imbalances in academic knowledge production on Africa. Addressing these asymmetries is the overarching goal of the Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA), which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
