GIGA Training

Conducting Interdisciplinary Research in the Social Sciences

Date

15/05/2023 - 16/05/2023

  • In this two-day PhD-level seminar, we will discuss the theory and practice of interdisciplinary research for social scientists. Interdisciplinary research involves bringing together knowledge and methods from multiple disciplines to address complex social problems. This seminar will examine the theoretical and practical aspects of interdisciplinary research in the social sciences, with a particular focus on practical applications.

We will start by discussing the notion of ‘disciplines’ in academia, and the limitations of research that is strictly based within a single discipline. We will then discuss the theoretical foundations of interdisciplinary research, including key concepts and principles, and explore the affordances and challenges of using an interdisciplinary approach.

Next, we will examine the different methodological approaches used in interdisciplinary social science research projects. We will look at case studies of successful interdisciplinary research projects and compare the strengths and weaknesses of different methodological approaches.

Finally, there will be an opportunity for students to discuss the applicability of interdisciplinary approaches to their own research projects.

    Dates

The training will take place in person on 15 and 16 May 2023 from 10:00 - 4:00pm. Further information will be provided to the participants after successful registration.
