The Indo-German 1.5 Track Strategic Dialogue was launched in the context of the intergovernmental consultations in Delhi in 2019. The exchange of think tankers and public officials was envisioned to become a pillar of the bilateral relations between both countries.
The Fourth Indo-German 1.5 Track Strategic Dialogue was carried out on 20 November 2024. Following the Indo German Governmental Consultations (see No. 19), the GIGA and SWP welcomed – at SWP's premises in Berlin - delegations from India, representing ICWA and RIS. Using the momentum of the bilateral relations created by both governments, the dialogue brought together academics, practitioners, and diplomats to analyse the Indo-Pacific and to tackle questions of cooperation, be it at the global level as well as in trade, tech, and climate mitigation. Ambassador Ajit Vinayak Gupte (Ambassador of India to Germany) and Ambassador Erik Kurzweil (Director for Indo-Pacific Policy, South Asia and Afghanistan at the German Federal Foreign Office) set the scene regarding the state of Indo-German relations. This year’s instalment got underway on 19 November with a reception at the Indian Embassy.
The third instalment of the Indo-German 1.5 Track Strategic Dialogue is organised by the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in cooperation with the Federal Foreign Office and the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). Our partner institutions are the Ministry of External Affairs of India, the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), and the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS).
For the 2020 meeting, the partners on the German side are the Bertelsmann Stiftung, the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) and the German Federal Foreign Office. The Indian partner institutions are the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) and the Ministry of External Affairs of India.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Indo-German 1.5 Track Strategic Dialogue 2020 had to take place as a digital format (via Webex). Each session was opened by two short inputs followed by discussion.
The first Indo-German 1.5 Track Strategic Dialogue took place on 1 November 2019 in New Delhi. Please find more info on the inaugural event here.
