In Indonesia and Malaysia, there was a remarkable mushrooming of civil society organisations since the 1970s, a growing salience of Islamist and ethnicist groups and, in the late 1990s during the Asian economic crisis, an emergence of broad social movements for reform.
This manuscript investigates how restrictions on CSOs affect the quality of horizontal accountability institutions like parliaments and courts. Our results imply that a crackdown on CSOs serves as a warning sign of deteriorating horizontal oversight.
The Focus examines the extent, contours, and impact of the foreign funding of mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina since the end of the Bosnian war of 1992–1995. It presents the different actors involved and highlights the implications of this funding in terms of architectural and religious practices.
Autocracies worldwide have exploited COVID-19 to curtail civil liberties. However, the health crisis and related socio-economic setbacks have also created needs-induced space, leading to a rise of civil society relief activism and protests. Read more in this GIGA Focus Global.
How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted civic space worldwide? Contrary to mainstream assumptions of “shrinking space,” analysis of five world regions in the Global South and non-OECD Europe and the Caucasus shows that civil society actors have, in fact, often still been able to sustain civic space.
