Regulation or Repression?: Government Influence on Political Content Moderation in India and Thailand

Policy Paper | 2024

  • Abstract

Governments and tech companies worldwide periodically clash over what content is acceptable to post online and who gets to decide. As states exert legal, economic, and political pressure on social media platforms and users to control online conversations, the platforms frequently seek to push back. In a new paper from Carnegie’s Digital Democracy Network, the GIGA's Janjira Sombatpoonsiri and Sangeeta Mahapatra compare government influence on social media in India and Thailand—and offer strategies for social media companies to challenge autocratic coercion.
