Sustainable Governance Indicators (SGI) 2024 | 2024

Abstract

Despite problems such as the malapportionment of constituencies, hereditary
parliamentarism and clientelist practices, Japan remains one of the most
advanced and stable democracies in both East Asia and the industrialized
world. There are no substantial problems with respect to fundamental civil
rights, such as freedom of press, assembly and association, and the current
government is noticeably less willing to challenge democratic standards than
some previous governments.

In his capacity as Regional Coordinator Pacific, Professor Patrick Köllner coordinated the country reports on Australia, New Zealand, and Japan for the Sustainable Governance Indictors 2024 of the Bertelsmann Foundation, working with six country specialists based in four countries.
