Jan Rörden joined the GIGA as the Digital Research Officer in May 2024. He previously worked as Researcher at Fraunhofer ISI. Learn more about Jan, and his role at the GIGA below.
Can you briefly describe your previous work experience and how it relates to this position? In my previous positions, I learned a lot about applying machine learning and data science methods to various research questions, mostly in the social sciences and related fields. At the GIGA, I want to make use of these experiences and bring them to a new research field, with the hope of enabling or supporting interesting research questions. Can you briefly describe what you do in your new position at the GIGA and your main tasks? My job is to support the researchers with bringing new (digital) methods to their projects, helping them to identify what is useful for a given research question. Additionally, I am involved in more abstract discussions regarding (new) technologies behind the scenes, and also currently responsible for the Research Data Management. In what ways do you stay current with the skills required in your field of work? I read a lot – a mix of general publications like the Economist (great articles that combine technical and societal aspects) or the Atlantic, a few technical publications as well as research papers. Additionally, I follow what others in my field and former colleagues are doing, or talk to a lot of people at conferences, to learn what they are working on and their thoughts on current developments. Coffee or tea Coffee – espresso or cappuccino! Handwritten or digital notes Handwritten – I have an elaborate (please don’t call it chaotic) system consisting of a notebook and a varying number of sticky notes.
