Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and State Minister Niels Annen visited the Hamburg Cluster of Excellence on Climate Research (CliCCS) on 21 May. Together with the leadership of CliCCS, GIGA President Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar presented the Cluster of Excellence “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society”. At a roundtable she and the CliCCS spokespersons Prof. Dr. Detlef Strammer and Dr. Jochem Marotzke discussed with the Ministers the current state of research. Knowledge about climate change, as it is generated in the Excellence Cluster, is important to convince doubters and to put the topic on the agenda of international politics, the Foreign Minister stated. Amrita Narlikar emphasised that for the public it is not enough to just say that it is complicated. The aim is to transmit complicated matters to different audiences. Directed at the policy world she added that is was important to know well the specific needs of international partners in order to achieve better results in negotiations regarding the joint objectives and efforts.
