In Brief | 24/05/2022
Once again, three of our scholars stand ready to answer your questions at “Book a Scientist”: Dr. Andreas Ufen, Eduardo Tamaki, and Dr. Sinan Chu will be offering individual talks on democratisation and autocratisation in Southeast Asia, populism in Latin America, and the “peoples” of the People’s Republic of China at this Leibniz Association event!
Who are the “peoples” in the People’s Republic of China, and where do they come from? Learn more about the history of the multiethnic state and how the Chinese government deals with the different ethnic communities from Dr. Sinan Chu.
Talk to Eduardo Tamaki about whether Latin America is truly the region of populism. The recent rise of politicians such as Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, Iván Duque in Colombia, and Keiko Fujimori in Peru has spurred a discussion about a possible renewed wave of Latin American populism following the so-called “Pink Tide” of the early 2000s.
Despite the democratic upheaval in Malaysia in 2018, the former ruling party has taken over the government again and even has a chance of winning this year’s elections. This is just one example of democratisation and autocratisation that can currently be observed in Southeast Asia. Learn more about these processes and the political systems in both Indonesia and Malaysia from Dr. Andreas Ufen.
The Leibniz Association’s “Book a Scientist” programme facilitates direct exchange between interested individuals and researchers. This time, the event is taking place as part of the SILBERSALZ Festival. The predominantly analogue multimedia science festival in Halle/Saale will be digitally supplemented by the virtual talks offered by Book a Scientist.
The 25-minute one-on-one talks will take place online on 15 June 2022 between 10:00 and 11:30 a.m. and from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. The events are free of charge. An overview of all topics and dates can be found at https://www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de/book-a-scientist.
As a member of the Leibniz Association, we are committed to the Leibniz principle of “theoria cum praxi”: science for the benefit of society.
