Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar has been won over for a second term: The Board of Trustees of the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) has reappointed the Institute’s President for another five years. The Trustees acknowledged and appreciated the positive developments the GIGA has shown in her previous term as a world-recognised institution for research and advice in the area of international politics.

Antje Leendertse, State Secretary in the Federal Foreign Office: “The GIGA offers outstanding research and advice. For the Foreign Office the combination of academia and policy, which was expanded systematically by the President in her first term, is of high value. We thank Amrita Narlikar for her excellent work and look forward to the successful continuation of our collaboration.”

Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research, and Equalities of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg: “To understand global developments and their linkages within their context is essential for our society. To this goal, Amrita Narlikar contributes as President of the GIGA and researcher of world-renown in an exceptional way. Together with her team she has increased the presence of the GIGA as a research institution of international repute – a great success, from which the entire scientific landscape of Hamburg benefits. I am delighted that Amrita Narlikar prolongs her term at the Institute and wish her the best of success for it.”

Amrita Narlikar: “I thank both Ministries for their constant support. The strong backing that research receives in Germany, and especially so in Hamburg, cannot be taken for granted, particularly if one knows other educational systems. It has been a pleasure to collaborate over the past five years. I look forward to deepening the cooperation further for the benefit of research and policy.”

Amrita was appointed President of the GIGA in 2014 and came with an already impressive academic record to Hamburg. She was Reader in International Political Economy at the University of Cambridge and has before taught at University of Oxford. Additionally to her leading the GIGA, she is Professor of International Relations at Universität Hamburg. Her expertise, valued around the globe, lies especially in the areas of world trade, rising powers, international negotiation, and multilateralism.

With this profile, Amrita Narlikar enriches the research work at the GIGA that was founded as the German Overseas Institute in 1964. The Institute is committed to a global approach to scholarship, which works with perspectives, concepts, and experiences from different world regions. It conducts social-science research with real-world relevance on Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, and on global developments. On this basis, the Institute also offers policy advice and aims to impact academic and societal debate.

As a member institution of the Leibniz Association, the GIGA is jointly funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, the Hamburg Ministry of Science, Research and Equalities, and the other federal states.
