GIGA Talk
19/05/2016
06:00 p.m. (CEST)
The importance of good governance and anti-corruption policies for development assistance has surged in recent years. This is reflected in not only the approach of many multilateral donors but also the aid instruments of the European Commission. EU aid has increasingly emphasised promoting good governance and fighting corruption as essential preconditions for successful development in partner countries both in the European neighbourhood and further afield. But has this quest to promote good governance and fight corruption in the context of EU development assistance been successful? How can development assistance contribute to lower corruption levels in partner countries?
ANTICORRP: Anti-Corruption Policies Revisited – Global Trends and European Responses to the Challenge of Corruption is a major research project that focuses on the factors that reduce corruption in societies and is funded by the European Commission (2012–2017). The GIGA contributes to the ANTICORRP project by examining the nexus between European aid and the successful promotion of good governance in European neighbourhood countries and African partner countries. This GIGA Talk will present the results of our research – particularly focusing on the examples of Egypt, Tunisia, Ghana, and Tanzania – and discuss the broader outcome of the ANTICORRP project.
