  • On 8 November 2016 the 58th US presidential election will take place. Under the outgoing President Obama, the United States pursued a fairly reserved foreign policy which primarily focused on securing vital core interests in the world regions. At the same time, the influence of other actors grew – such as that of China in Latin America and Africa and that of Russia in the Middle East. What will be Obama’s foreign policy legacy in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East?

Which challenges will the new president be confronted with? And which new foreign policy initiatives can we expect? These questions will be discussed by experts from the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and the GIGA at the next GIGA Forum.

Speakers Dr. Pascal Abb, Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute for Asian Studies and expert on Chinese foreign policy and international relations of East Asia.

Dr. Josef Braml, German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP)

Prof. Dr. Henner Fürtig, Director of the GIGA Institute for Middle East Studies

Prof. Dr. Robert Kappel, President Emeritus of the GIGA and Senior Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute for African Affairs

Moderator Prof. Dr. Detlef Nolte, Director of the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies
