  • The end of the commodity boom has thrown Latin America's economies into a crisis from which many countries are recovering only slowly. Structural adaptation programmes including the removal of subsidies and increasing taxes and the plight of some parts of the population have led to social protests and political instability. In international politics Latin America and the Caribbean are threatened by marginalisation. At the same time, probably no other world region will be affected by the US change of government as much as Latin America. Which risks are entailed in Donald Trump's presidency? Will China’s role as a countervailing power increase and intensify its focus on the pacific region? Which future role will Europe play in the region? These and other questions will be discussed at the GIGA Forum. The event is a joint initiative of GRULAC (Grupo de Cónsules Lationamericanos y del Caribe), Instituto Cervantes and the GIGA.
