The Politics of Reception: Syria’s Neighborhood as a Social Field

This international workshop, jointly organized by the GIGA Institute for Middle East Studies and the Lebanese American University, aims to bring together an interdisciplinary group of researchers (from political science, sociology, anthropology, migration studies, peace and conflict studies) who study political, social and economic dynamics in the neighborhood of warzones.

Thematic panels will examine the politics of reception with regard to, among other things, national policies and law-making processes, the dynamic interplay of shifting local power constellations, economic structures, and identity discourses, as well as the transformation of border towns.

While the main focus of the workshop will be on the politics of reception in the immediate neighborhood of the Syrian crisis, discussions will draw inspiration from other contexts (Latin America, Africa).
