GIGA Highlights 2019

GIGA looks back on an eventful and successful year 2019. The picture gallery shows some selected highlights.

Picture of a woman and Felix Haaß receiving a price — For the second time since 2017, a young researcher from the GIGA received the Leibniz Dissertation Award: Dr. Felix Haaß for his doctoral thesis on the influence of development aid on democratisation processes in post-conflict societies.

Prof. Dr. Matthias Basedau and Julia-Niharika Sen at the panel discussion "In God's Name: Religion and Violence in Africa." — Prof. Dr. Matthias Basedau, Director of GIGA`s Institute of African Affairs, with moderator Julia-Niharika Sen at the panel discussion "In God's Name: Religion and Violence in Africa." In the collaborative event series of NDR and the GIGA “Crossing Borders" (“Grenzgänger – Auslandskorrespondenten treffen Wissenschaftler”) – foreign correspondents connect with scholars to discuss current events across the world, including the question on how Germany and Hamburg are affected by these developments.

Amrita Narlikar, Nils Annen and Andreas Cichowicz — Together with the Senate Chancellery Hamburg the GIGA organised the moderated panel discussion “India and Germany: Shared Values, Different Perspectives?” at Hamburg City Hall, where Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar, State Minister Niels Annen, and Chief Editor Andreas Cichowicz had a vivid exchange on this important partnership. The event was part of the “India Week Hamburg 2019”, to which we contributed on politics, economy, and culture.
