In this introduction to a Special Issue on “Novel Perspectives on the Global Politics of Status”, the authors discuss the main findings of the contributions and give an outlook of the impact of their multifaceted explorations of status-seeking in the contemporary global order on IR research.

This special issue advances debates on status in international relations by integrating novel empirical research with innovative theoretical perspectives. It moves beyond traditional power-centric views, highlighting social and relational dimensions of status-seeking as a foreign policy practice.

In diesem Beitrag beschäftigt sich Miriam Prys-Hansen mit der Bedeutung der BRICS in der globalen Sicherheitspolitik. Während in der zunehmend heterogenen Gruppe interne Spannungen fortbestehen, gewinnt die Gruppe dabei sowohl symbolisch als auch diskursiv an Einfluss – gerade im Globalen Süden.

Die BRICS+-Staatsoberhäupter treffen sich im Oktober zum ersten Mal in ihrer neuen Zusammensetzung nach der Erweiterung im Jahr 2023. Dabei werden Initiativen in den Bereichen Sicherheit, Handel und Finanzen sowie eine mögliche weitere Expansion verhandelt.

This paper focuses on India’s multifaceted approach to its “China challenge” with and outside the climate regime. It examines whether this rivalry might lead to a breakdown of cooperation and an increased potential for conflict and weaponisation of seemingly disconnected issue-areas.
