Praktikum am IAA

Das IAA vergibt regelmäßig Praktikumsplätze an Sozialwissenschaftler(innen) für die unten genannten Arbeitsfelder. Den Praktikant(inn)en soll ein breiter Überblick über die Tätigkeit am Institut vermittelt werden. Daher legt das IAA Wert darauf, dass die Kandidat(inn)en Einblick in möglichst viele der wissenschaftlichen Projekte der IAA-Mitarbeiter erhalten und an GIGA-übergreifenden Veranstaltungen und Sitzungen der Forschungsschwerpunkte teilnehmen. Der konkrete Einsatz, etwa bezüglich der Materialrecherchen für unsere wissenschaftlichen Publikationen und für die laufende Forschungsarbeit oder die organisatorische und inhaltliche Mitarbeit bei der Durchführung von Workshops und Konferenzen, hängt vom jeweils aktuellen Arbeitsanfall, den spezifischen Interessen und Qualifikationen (z. B. Sprachkenntnisse) der Praktikant(inn)en und der Aufgabenteilung zwischen den Praktikant(inn)en ab.

Voraussetzungen:

• abgeschlossenes Grundstudium oder (fast) abgeschlossenes Bachelor-Studium
• Interesse an Afrikastudien im Hinblick auf die wirtschaftliche, gesellschaftliche und politische Entwicklung der Länder des subsaharischen Afrikas,
• Interesse an und Kenntnisse über entwicklungstheoretische und/oder politikwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen in Bezug auf die Region,
• gute Sprachkenntnisse: vorausgesetzt wird Englisch, gute Französisch- oder andere Sprachkenntnisse sind von Vorteil,
• gute EDV-Kenntnisse (z. B. Textverarbeitung und Tabellenkalkulation), nach Möglichkeit Statistikkenntnisse.

Die minimale Praktikumsdauer beträgt 6 Arbeitswochen. Das Praktikum ist unentgeltlich. Leider können wir keinerlei finanzielle Verpflichtungen gegenüber den Praktikant(inn)en übernehmen. Sie müssen ihr Praktikum in der Regel selbst finanzieren und auch selbst für ihre Unterkunft in Hamburg während des Praktikums sorgen. Das IAA kann ggf. Empfehlungen für die Einwerbung von Drittmitteln zur Finanzierung des Praktikums zur Verfügung stellen.

Mögliche Arbeitsfelder:

• Material-Recherchen (unter Anleitung und in Absprache mit jeweiligem IAA-Mitarbeiter),
• Redaktionsassistenz,
• Vorbereitung und Organisation von Workshops/Konferenzen
• Mitarbeit an Forschungsprojekten.

Schriftliche Bewerbungen sind bis spätestens 4 Monate vorher einzureichen und sollten folgende Unterlagen beinhalten:

• Formloses Anschreiben, aus dem die Motivation für ein Praktikum am IAA (z.B. Beschäftigung mit Afrikabezogenen Themenfeldern, Aufenthalte in der Region) hervorgeht und in dem der gewünschte Zeitraum angegeben wird (möglichst mit Alternativen)
• Tabellarischer Lebenslauf
• Sonstige Dokumente, die eine Bewerbung positiv unterstützen können (Zeugnisse etc.)

Internship at the Institute of African Affairs (IAA)

The Institute of African Affairs (IAA) regularly offers internship positions to social scientists concerning the fields specified below. During their period of stay, we try to introduce interns to the whole range of activities taking place at the GIGA in general and the IAA in particular. Therefore, candidates will get an insight into as many scientific projects of the IAA Staff as possible and usually take part in the GIGA’s regular events and meetings of the research programmes. The concrete tasks depend on the current demand within research projects, the respective competence and specific interests of the candidates (e.g. language proficiency) as well as the distribution of tasks among them. They may, for instance, include data and literature inquiries for our scientific publications and for the ongoing research work, assistance in data analysis or the organisation of workshops and conferences.

Requirements:

• Completed basic course or almost completed Bachelor programme,
• Interest in African Studies with regard to the economic, social and political development of the sub-Saharan African countries,
• Interest in and knowledge on development theories and political science in respect of the region,
• Language proficiency: fluent English is required, good knowledge of French or any other language is an advantage,
• Good knowledge of  Electronic Data Processing, EDP (e.g. text processing and spreadsheet), and, possibly, knowledge of statistics.

The minimum internship duration is six weeks. Unfortunately, we cannot pay any remuneration to our interns. They must, de jure, finance their internship and also cater for their accommodation in Hamburg during their internship themselves. The IAA can, should the situation arise, make recommendations for candidates to get financial support for the internship from a third party.

Possible Work Fields:

• Data and literature inquiries (under the guidance and with prior consultation of the respective IAA Staff),
• Editorial assistance
• Preparation and organization of workshops/conferences
• Assistence in research projects.

Written applications are to be received, at least, four months before and should comprise the following documents:

• Informal write-up, which demonstrates the motivation for an internship at IAA (e.g. preoccupation with fields and themes related to Africa, personal experiences in the region, etc.) and in which the desired internship period, possibly with alternatives, is specified,
• Curriculum Vitae,
• Further documents which may positively support an application (certificates, etc.).
