Globalization of Chinese Companies - Success Factors and Impact on European Industries

Outward foreign direct Investment (OFDI) from China has increased significantly in the last few years. Europe has been one of the main targets for Chinese strategic-asset-seeking FDI, increasingly through mergers and acquisitions (M&As). However, our understanding of this new phenomenon is still rather limited and the research done so far on the strategies of Chinese companies investing in Europe, determinants of their success and failure and implications for European host countries’ business climate, growth and employment has just begun.

The analysis of the investment strategies of Chinese companies abroad, particularly in the EU, aims to determine the impact of Chinese companies in Europe and the role they play in the technology-intensive industries. The research focus lies on the Internationalization strategies of Chinese companies. Moreover, the industrial policy instruments applied by the Chinese government are analysed as well.

Research Questions:

  • Which internationalization strategies are chosen by Chinese companies when investing abroad, particularly in the EU?
  • What policy instruments are applied by the Chinese government in order to support domestic companies’ overseas investment?
  • Which impact has the internationalisation of Chinese companies on the development of technology-intensive industries (electronic, telecommunication) in Europe?.
