Projects

  • DFG funds cooperation on "New Frontiers on Federalism Research"
    The German Research Foundation (DFG) has granted funds from its program "Initiation and Intensification of Bilateral Cooperation" to promote the collaboration between GIGA and the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), São Paulo on "New Frontiers on Federalism Research: Rethinking Multi-level Party Politics in the Americas and Beyond". The research joint initiative is going to be co-funded by FAPESP (São Paulo Research Agency). In the context of this cooperation an international event will be hosted in São Paulo on the subject. Subsequently an application to DFG and FAPESP for long-term funding will be prepared. The applicants are Dr. Jorge Gordin (GIGA)and Prof. George Avelino Filho (CEPESP, FGV).

 


Conferences/Events/Lectures

  • In advance of the next EU–Latin America/Carribean Summit in Santiago de Chile, the first European–Latin American academic summit is to take place on 22–23 January 2013. GIGA acting President Detlef Nolte was invited to attend the first preparatory meeting at the Institut des Amériques in Paris on 7 June 2012. Approximately 80 representatives of universities and research institutes in Europe and Latin American participated. An additional preparatory meeting is planned for November 2012 in Lima. Preparations for the academic summit are being coordinated by the Institut des Amériques in Paris and CLEARE in Santiago de Chile. The GIGA is part of the preparatory group

Personnel matters

  • Bert Hoffmann, the acting director of the GIGA Institute of Latin American Studies, has been elected to the Advisory Committee of the Institut des Amériques (IdA) in Paris for the next four years. The IdA is France's central academic institution for interdisciplinary studies on North and South America, bringing together universities and research institutions from around the country. The Advisory Committee is made up of 25 renowned scholars, of which 8 are located abroad.

  • President and Executive Director of the new EU-Latinamerica/Caribbean Foundation visit GIGA
    On 7 November the opening ceremony for the new Hamburg-based EU-Latinamerica/Caribbean Foundation was held. The next day, the President of the Foundation, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and its Executive Director, Jorge Valdez, visited GIGA for talks on future cooperation possibilities with GIGA President Prof. Dr. Detlef Nolte and the Acting Director of the GIGA Institute of Latin American Studies, Dr. Bert Hoffmann.

    La Presidenta y el Director ejecutivo de la nueva Fundación Unión Europea - América Latina y el Caribe (EULAC) de visita en el GIGA
    El día 7 de noviembre se inauguró con un acto festivo la nueva Fundación Unión Europea- América Latina y el Caribe (EULAC) con sede en Hamburgo. Al día siguiente tanto la Presidenta de dicha Fundación, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, como el Director ejecutivo de la misma, Jorge Valdez Carrillo, visitaron nuestro Instituto. Aquí se reunieron con el Presidente interino del GIGA, Prof. Dr. Detlef Nolte, y el Director interino del GIGA Instituto de Estudios Latinoamericanos (ILAS), Dr. Bert Hoffmann, con el propósito de establecer mecanismos de cooperación a corto plazo.
